  2. Tennessee. He was a member of Congress
  3. 1907-33, and, as F D Roosevelt's secretary of
  4. state 1933-44, he opposed German and Japanese
  5. aggression. He was identified with the Good
  6. Neighbour Policy of non-intervention in Latin
  7. America. In his last months of office he
  8. paved the way for a system of collective
  9. security, for which he was called `father' of
  10. the United Nations. He was awarded the Nobel
  11. Prize for Peace 1945.
